Calgary patients ask, “What is a dental crown?”
A dental crown is a highly versatile restorative or cosmetic dental treatment. Over the years, dental crowns have been made of a variety of materials, including metals, alloys, gold, porcelain, ceramic, or a combination.

Dr. Kindal Robertson and Dr. James Redd are both experienced doctors of dental surgery (DDS) who offer a comprehensive array of advanced dental services with a biological philosophy. The team at Wellness Dental believe in using only the safest, biocompatible, and attractive materials and treatments for our patients’ long-term oral and physical wellness.
Our dental crowns are typically made from natural-looking and beautiful ceramic. Thanks to our CEREC (CERamic REConstruction) system, a custom-designed and precisely manufactured ceramic dental crown can be comfortably and conveniently manufactured and placed in our office in as little as one visit. Crowns made from other materials would often be sent out to an offsite dental lab, requiring the patient to have a mould made to form a physical model of their mouths and then wait for weeks to receive their restorations.
With our advanced CEREC technology, our doctors are able to generate a three dimensional image of the patient’s mouth using a comfortable intraoral camera. Drs. Robertson or Redd can discuss the appropriate restoration with the patient, send the personalized design to the software, and receive the perfectly milled ceramic prosthetic on site.
A dental crown serves many purposes, including:
- Changing the appearance of an unattractive, misshapen, or discolored tooth
- Protecting and covering teeth that are weakened, decayed, broken, worn, or have a large filling
- Securely anchoring a dental bridge in place
- Completing a dental implant
Dental crowns are long lasting and durable prosthetics that can restore the function and aesthetics of the teeth without too much special care required, other than maintenance of proper and thorough oral hygiene. As with natural teeth, certain habits should be avoided, such as grinding or clenching teeth, biting or chewing hard substances like fingernails or ice, or using teeth as a tool to open any types of packaging.
Wellness Dental serve patients in Calgary, Red Deer, Airdrie, Canmore, and surrounding areas in Alberta. For more information about dental crowns, contact us today at (403) 800-0818.
